When a Model Number Is Not Enough: Buying Finisar FCLF8522P2BTL and FTLX1471D3BCV
It was the last Friday in February 2024. Our network engineer sent a purchase request that looked simple enough:
- 12x Finisar FCLF8522P2BTL SFP modules
- 4x Finisar FTLX1471D3BCV SFP+ modules
He wrote in the notes that the modules were needed before the March 22 office cutover. I have been the office administrator here since 2020, and I handle roughly 80 to 100 purchase orders a year, from office chairs to IT hardware. The routine is usually the same: get the exact part number, compare a few quotes, buy from an approved vendor, track the shipment.
This order should have been exactly that routine. It was not.
The quote that looked like a deal
Our regular IT vendor quoted the full order at $4,180. A smaller reseller showed up in my supplier search with the same two part numbers and a total of $2,890. I saw the savings and basically stopped reading. I did not check whether the description said Finisar or compatible with Finisar. I did not compare the specs. The listing used the model numbers I needed, and I was already thinking about what else had to get done that week.
That was the whole mistake. Actually, the mistake was assuming the model number was enough. It turned out the model number was exactly the trap: the discount vendor could reference the Finisar part number in their listing and still sell a different optic.
When the boxes arrived
The delivery came in three days, which felt like great service until the engineer opened the first bag. The packing slip looked perfect. The modules themselves did not. The labels were plain silver, with no Finisar logo and no part-number information that matched our PO. He looked at me and said, in a very patient voice, that this was not what he specified.
I argued that the model numbers on the listing were correct. He explained that the listing was for a compatible replacement, not for a Finisar module. To someone who does not live in networking, that sounds like a small distinction. To finance, it is a much bigger deal.
The expensive part
Our purchase order said manufacturer: Finisar. The vendor invoice said compatible replacement. Accounting would not match the PO to the invoice. The vendor agreed to take the modules back, but the restocking fee was 15 percent and we paid return shipping. Then we ordered from the regular supplier, paid for expedited freight, and managed to get everything to the office before the cutover. By the time the return and the new order were done, the fiasco cost us about $750 more than the original approved quote would have.
When I put the two quotes side by side afterward, I finally understood what I had skipped. The approved quote named Finisar as the product manufacturer. The discount listing named Finisar only as a compatibility target. Same model number in both places, different product. A thirty-second check would have caught it.
Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
My checklist for buying network optics now
I am not an engineer, and I do not pretend to know when a third-party optic is acceptable. What I do know now is how to make sure the purchase matches the request. Before I place a transceiver order, I check three things:
- The manufacturer field has to match. If the request says Finisar, the quote and invoice should say Finisar, not compatible with Finisar.
- The specs have to match the model number. For FCLF8522P2BTL, the data sheet says 1000BASE-SX, 850nm, multimode. For FTLX1471D3BCV, it says 10GBASE-LR, 1310nm, single-mode. If the listing says something different, I stop and ask.
- The invoice has to name the exact manufacturer and model. That is not just accounting paperwork; it is the control that catches mismatched orders before they become a network problem.
I also use the Coherent support site to check Finisar part numbers now. Finisar has been part of Coherent since II-VI acquired it in 2019 and later changed the company name to Coherent. The data sheets are public, and they take about two minutes to read.
Bottom line
Nobody handed me a bonus for finding the cheapest quote that week. What I got instead was a delay, an unhappy engineer, and a lesson about reading the full product description. The cheapest quote is only cheap if it is for exactly what was requested. Otherwise it is a delay with fees attached.
I still make plenty of small mistakes in this job. But network components are no longer one of them. A little prevention is genuinely cheaper than the cure.
