Will a Finisar SFP+ work in my Cisco or HPE switch?

Most of the time, yes. Finisar optics were designed for broad compatibility across major brands. At least, that's been my experience with Cisco Catalyst and HPE Aruba switches. If you want a genuine Finisar transceiver, buy by the part number—for example, FTLF8536P4BCL—and check the datasheet. If the seller won't put the exact part number in the listing, walk away.

Are Finisar transceivers still made?

Sort of. Finisar no longer exists as an independent company, but the brand and product lines are still around. II-VI acquired Finisar in 2019, then changed its own name to Coherent in 2022. As of January 2025, Coherent still lists Finisar modules like the FTLF8536P4BCL in its product portfolio, and resellers continue to stock them.

For purchasing, that means you might see invoices and purchase orders from 'Coherent' for what you think of as a 'Finisar' module. In your asset system, write 'Finisar (Coherent)' so the next person can find it.

Should I buy official Finisar or a compatible SFP module?

It depends on where the link sits. For a critical 10G connection between our buildings, I buy genuine Finisar or a module from the switch vendor. For less important links, I've used compatible modules and had them work fine. The distinction matters less than the seller's honesty.
