The Finisar Optics Checklist I Use After a 2780-Unit Mistake
This checklist is for anyone about to buy Finisar optics or Finisar-compatible transceivers for an enterprise network, data center, or campus project. If you are sourcing from Australia, there are extra questions to ask about stock and support that usually don't appear on the quote. I manage procurement for a managed network services provider and have been handling transceiver orders since 2017. I have made enough mistakes to keep a checklist. This is it.
I'll keep the intro short. This is not a deep technical tutorial; it is the list I follow when someone says, 'We need Finisar optics.'
When this checklist applies
Use this when you are about to approve an order for SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP28 or similar Finisar or compatible modules. It also applies if you searched for 'Finisar Australia' and ended up at a reseller page; some of those pages use the brand name without being official distributors. No checklist can cover every network, but this covers the questions I forgot at least once.
Finisar company overview: the quick version
Finisar was founded in 1988 and became one of the largest independent optical transceiver manufacturers. In 2019, II-VI completed its acquisition of Finisar for about $3.2 billion. After II-VI acquired Coherent in 2022, the combined company became Coherent Corp. The Finisar name now shows up mainly on legacy part numbers, product pages, and installed equipment. From a buyer's viewpoint, that is not trivia. It affects how you research parts, who supports them, and why one supplier says 'Finisar' while another says 'Coherent' for what looks like the same module.
That also explains the odd 'Finisar vs Crown Castle' search phrase. If that is why you are here, here is the short version: Finisar is a manufacturer of optical components. Crown Castle is a US tower and fiber infrastructure REIT. They are not competing products. The comparison only makes sense if you are looking at an investment portfolio, not at a transceiver purchase.
The six-step Finisar optics checklist
Put the optical link spec before the brand name. If someone asks for 'Finisar SFP+,' the correct first response is 'For which link?'—not 'Which model?' The SFP+ form factor only tells you the plug. 10GBASE-SR and 10GBASE-LR fit the same cage, but they use different wavelengths and have different reach; SR is for multimode fiber and LR is for single-mode fiber. I learned this when our team ordered 2780 SFP+ modules for a refresh and missed that a subgroup of 112 was for single-mode inter-building links. No amount of Finisar quality fixes a wrong optic. I should have caught it when I reviewed the quote (note to self: read the line item, not the summary total). Put fiber type, distance, wavelength, and the IEEE 802.3 interface name on the RFQ.
Choose original versus compatible on support risk, not on label preference. A 'Finisar-compatible' module is usually a third-party replacement designed to work in the same switch slot. It may be perfectly good for a lab or non-critical access point. But if you need official support from the switch vendor, that vendor may reject the case when the optic is not on its supported list. I have used both genuine and compatible modules. I don't have a religious position. I have a support budget, and the budget gets involved when the port stops passing traffic.
Verify the coding against your switch model and software version. Two modules can have identical optical performance and still fail because the switch sees the wrong EEPROM code. This coding is not just a serial number; think of it as the optic's ID card. Before you buy, tell the supplier the exact switch family, OS version, and port type. Ask if the module was tested on that software version and whether the supplier can provide a screenshot showing it is recognized as supported. A supplier that answers 'it works on everything' is probably telling you what you want to hear.
Check the datasheet and temperature range yourself. The optical market has gone through consolidation, so old Finisar numbers and newer Coherent equivalents sit side by side on distributor shelves. Do not rely on memory or on an ecommerce title. Confirm the current part number, digital diagnostics support, power budget, and case temperature rating. For an outdoor cabinet in Australia, a commercial-temperature module rated 0 to 70°C may be the wrong pick. That is the kind of detail that appears in the datasheet, not in the shopping cart.
Do not assume 'Finisar Australia' means local support. Genuine Finisar/Coherent modules are normally sold through distributors and resellers. An Australian reseller may still be drop-shipping from Singapore or the US. Before you pay, ask who issues the invoice, where the stock is located, how the RMA process works, and whether replacement units are cross-shipped. I have dealt with an RMA that took five weeks and forced an extra site visit. The vendor was not sketchy; the part simply had to go back overseas.
Price the full cost, including failure. A lower per-unit price can be the most expensive option. In 2019 I saved about $4,200 by picking a cheaper compatible SFP+ for one deployment. A few months later, modules from that same lot caused an intermittent link problem. Diagnosis, emergency shipping, and overtime ran around $7,800. I am not saying compatible modules are always wrong. I am saying the unit price was never the full project cost.

Watch firmware release notes
Switch vendors sometimes update the supported transceiver list. A module that worked on one version of the switch operating system can show up as 'unsupported' after an upgrade. If the network vendor does not list the module, test one unit before the maintenance window. Do not let the first test be during the change.
Keep one sample from each batch
After we accept a batch, we keep one sealed module and record its part number, batch code, and supplier invoice reference. That sounds like extra work until you are troubleshooting a partial failure and the supplier asks for lot traceability. Then it is the difference between a quick replacement and a long email argument.
Respect the difference between 'Finisar' and 'works with Finisar'
Words like 'equivalent' or 'compatible for Finisar part #' are placeholders until a datasheet proves otherwise. The Finisar part number you specify should match the label on the product, or the supplier should say clearly that they are offering an alternative. I have approved rush orders that mixed those two categories on one line. That is how small discrepancies hide.
