Finisar SFP Modules: What I Learned From $3,200 Worth of Mistakes

My rule of thumb: Use Finisar for any network that handles customer-facing or critical business traffic. For everything else, I’d consider cheaper alternatives—but I’d check the risks first.
A final note on the “USB power delivery while recording” thing
I mentioned this because some network monitoring tools use USB. I’ve had setups where the USB port couldn’t deliver enough power to run both the interface and the line. That caused test failures. If you’re troubleshooting with Finisar modules, make sure your laptop or host device can handle the power draw—especially if you’re using a bus-powered SFP tester.
