Where I'd still use Finisar — and where I wouldn't
If you're running a standard data center or campus network with Cisco, HPE, Arista, or similar gear, I'd say a Finisar SFP or SFP+ is a reasonable, cost-effective choice. In my experience, most 'incompatible' cases trace back to code levels or wrong SKUs, not a conspiracy by switch vendors. For 80% of our ports, Finisar gets the job done at a meaningful discount to OEM modules.
But this is where I have to be honest about limits. If you're in a mission-critical environment where the OEM vendor will hold your hand during a 2 a.m. incident, then the OEM module's premium starts to look like insurance, not waste. For budget planning, as of January 2025, I've gotten quotes ranging from roughly $90 to $140 for a genuine Finisar 10G SFP+ SR module from two authorized distributors. That's a ballpark, not a price promise — verify current pricing because distributor inventory changes. If someone quotes you $25 for a 'Finisar' module, that's a red flag.
Dodged a bullet a few months ago: I almost ordered 24 Finisar copper SFP modules for what turned out to be a fiber run.
