What is Finisar, and is the company still in business?
Finisar is an optical transceiver and components manufacturer founded in 1988. It makes the SFP, SFP+, and QSFP modules that plug into enterprise switches, routers, and data center gear. In 2019, Finisar was acquired by II-VI, which later acquired Coherent and took the Coherent name in 2022. (Because photonics companies love rebranding.) You'll still see Finisar on modules in inventory and compatibility lists because the product lines kept their part numbers.
From a procurement standpoint, what matters is support. According to Coherent's corporate history page (coherent.com), the acquisition was completed in September 2019 and the Finisar portfolio remains part of Coherent. We order Finisar part numbers and modules arrive with original Finisar labels. The brand is older, but the product is not a discontinued orphan. If your vendor calls it discontinued, check Coherent's product page before you pay an upcharge for a different brand.
Are Finisar transceivers compatible with HPE switches?
Usually, yes—but that usually is doing real work here. SFP and SFP+ follow the Multi-Source Agreement, which standardizes size and electrical specs. HPE switches can reject or flag modules whose vendor ID isn't in the firmware. Finisar modules did not trigger that issue in our HPE environment, which made sense given Finisar's history as an OEM supplier.
I had a genuine two-week hesitation between HPE-branded optics and Finisar equivalents. HPE-branded gave warranty peace of mind. Finisar cost around 35% less per module. I ultimately chose Finisar because our switch documentation referenced MSA-compliant third-party optics, and I documented every module serial number in our tracking system. A Finisar WaveShaper is a programmable optical filter. It shapes, blocks, or passes specific wavelengths in a fiber. Put another way: it's a wavelength traffic cop. You find WaveShapers in optical labs, ROADM testing, and spectral analysis—not in a standard enterprise network rack.
During an audit of our 2023 spending, I flagged a quote that included one for a point-to-point 40G link. The engineer had picked it from the vendor catalog because it looked flexible. It would have cost more than the entire rest of the project. We swapped it for a standard QSFP+ module, and the project worked fine. Unless you're building an optical line system, the WaveShaper is almost certainly not what you need. It's a specialized lab instrument, not a network transceiver.

A connector is the physical end of a fiber patch cable—the thing you click into the transceiver. For SFP/SFP+ modules, the dominant type is LC. You'll also see SC in older installations, and MPO/MTP in high-density data centers. Polish matters too: UPC (blue boot) and APC (green boot) are not interchangeable. Mixing them means no light, or worse, damaged connectors.
Everything I'd read said buying a transceiver is about speed and reach. In practice, I found the fiber plant determines the connector. So glad I double-checked the patch panel before ordering: I almost ordered 20 LC/UPC SFP modules for a building wired with SC/APC patch panels—one click away. According to the IEEE 802.3 standard (standards.ieee.org), 10GBASE-SR runs up to 300m over OM3 fiber. But IEEE doesn't care whether your ends are LC or SC. The connector spec is a separate decision, and getting it wrong gets you a $1,200 redo.

A 5G gateway like the G310 doesn't replace fiber optics; it sits alongside it. The unit we evaluated had a 5G modem for WAN plus an SFP+ port for a fiber uplink to the main switch. So you still need to choose an SFP+ module with the right speed, wavelength, and connector.
By 2025, the line between wireless gateway and network switch is blurring. In 2020, 5G and fiber were separate projects with separate budgets. Now, a dual-radio gateway is just another endpoint, and its SFP+ port expects the same module discipline as any switch. The fundamentals haven't changed—match the port, match the fiber type, match the connector—but the execution has transformed. In Q2 2024, when we compared quotes for our gateway deployment, the 5G modem handled the WAN while a Finisar 10G SFP+ module handled the LAN uplink. What's the total cost of ownership—i.e., not just the unit price, but the compatibility risk—of a module that isn't officially qualified for your switch? The cheap option might be 60% less, but if the vendor won't put compatibility in writing, every future issue becomes a finger-pointing exercise.
In 2020, I was okay taking that risk. By 2025, I'm not. After a universal module failed to link on an HPE switch and the vendor blamed the switch, we implemented a rule: any quote must include the exact SKU plus a compatibility matrix for our equipment.
